Friday, May 2, 2014
Dr. Adriana Medina shared research and strategies with tutors in a workshop hosted by United Way of Central Carolinas and the Center for Adolescent Literacies. The workshop--Tutoring 201 Working with ELL Students--was held Thursday, May 1, 2014 at the United Way offices in uptown Charlotte.
Dr. Medina, an Associate Professor in the Department of Reading & Elementary Education at UNC Charlotte, provided information about the challenges English language learners face. One of the issues she addressed is the challenge of learning not only social aspects of English (casual, conversational English) but also the more challenging academic vocabularies vital to success in schools.
Materials from Dr. Medina's presentation are available at the Tutor Training link of this website. The RWS Tutor Handbook contains several of the strategies shared by Dr. Medina.
