Dr. Paola Pilonieta of the Department of Reading & Elementary Education led a workshop for Project 1,000 tutors, mentors and readers at the United Way of Central Carolinas on March 19, 2014 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The session—Phonics & Fluency—was the first in a series of Tutoring 201 workshops developed by the Center for Adolescent Literacies to support the Project 1,000 initiative to recruit, train and support 1,000 tutors, mentors and readers in the greater Charlotte region. The Center has conducted several Tutoring 101 introductory tutoring workshops over the past year reaching more than 275 volunteers. Dr. Pilonieta provided the 21 tutors at the Phonics & Fluency workshop with strategies to help students who struggle with decoding and fluency.
