Tutoring isn't the only way to support developing readers. Volunteers and others often take on the role of mentor, occasional reader or "lunch buddy." Mentors and readers can play an important role in the literacy and learning development of children and youth by modeling and supporting them. While mentors and readers may not have as their primary purpose teaching literacy skills, they can help youth build greater self-efficacy as readers.
